Study in Malaysia: 124 questions answered
Clear answers for Pakistani students and parents on costs, universities, English, the EMGS visa, scholarships, life in Malaysia and what happens after graduation.
Studying in Malaysia
Is Malaysia a good country for Pakistani students?
Yes, for most students who want an internationally recognised degree at an affordable cost in a Muslim-friendly country close to home. It is less suitable if your main goal is to work and settle abroad straight after graduation, because Pakistan is not on Malaysia's Graduate Pass list in 2026.
Why do Pakistani students choose Malaysia over the UK or Australia?
Mainly cost and convenience. Tuition and living costs are far lower, degrees are taught in English, halal food and mosques are everywhere, the visa runs through one agency (EMGS) without an interview, and flights home take about five to six hours.
Are Malaysian degrees internationally recognised?
Degrees from MQA-accredited programmes at recognised universities are accepted internationally. Universiti Malaya ranked 56th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, and branch campuses of Monash, Nottingham and others award their home university's degree.
Is a Malaysian degree valid in Pakistan?
Yes, when the programme is accredited and studied on campus. HEC assesses foreign degrees case by case. Since Spring 2026 HEC does not recognise conventional degrees delivered entirely online or in blended mode unless the host regulator approves that mode.
What language are classes taught in?
Almost all programmes for international students are taught in English. Malay is the national language, but you do not need it to study, and English is widely spoken in cities.
Is Malaysia safe for international students?
Malaysia is generally considered safe for students. Universities have campus security and international student offices. Use normal precautions in big cities, such as watching your phone and bag in crowded places and using registered ride-hailing apps at night.
Is Malaysia a Muslim-friendly country for Pakistani students?
Yes. Islam is the official religion, halal food certified by JAKIM is widely available, most campuses have a surau or mosque, and Friday prayers are easy to attend. Ramadan and both Eids are public holidays.
How far is Malaysia from Pakistan?
Flights from Lahore, Islamabad or Karachi to Kuala Lumpur usually take about five to six hours non-stop, longer with a connection. Malaysia is three hours ahead of Pakistan.
Can I bring my family with me?
Family can visit on a normal visit visa. Postgraduate students may be able to apply for dependant passes for a spouse and children through their university and EMGS. Undergraduates usually cannot bring dependants.
Do I need an education consultant to study in Malaysia?
No, you can apply directly to universities. A good consultant saves time by shortlisting accredited programmes, checking documents, applying for scholarships and making sure your EMGS visa file is complete.
Costs and money
How much does it cost to study in Malaysia from Pakistan?
A first year at a public university typically costs around PKR 2.2 – 3.7 million including living costs and visa fees, and PKR 3.2 – 5 million at a private university or branch campus, before scholarships. Medicine costs more.
What is the tuition fee for a bachelor's degree in Malaysia?
Typical yearly tuition for international students is about USD 2,500 – 5,000 at public universities and USD 6,000 – 9,500 at private universities, according to Education Malaysia estimates. Branch campuses and medicine can cost more.
What is the monthly living cost for a student in Malaysia?
A careful single student usually spends around RM 2,000 a month (about PKR 140,000) in the Klang Valley, covering a shared room, food, transport and phone. Smaller cities cost less.
Is Kuala Lumpur more expensive than other cities?

How much are the visa and EMGS fees?
For a new student the EMGS processing fee is RM 1,600 plus 8% service tax (about RM 1,728) for a pass of six to twelve months, plus the eVAL, medical screening, insurance, Student Pass sticker and i-Kad. Expect about RM 2,800 – 3,000 in the first year.
Is there a refundable deposit or personal bond?
Yes. EMGS collects a personal bond that depends on nationality and is refunded when you complete or leave your course. It has been reported at RM 750 for Pakistani nationals; confirm the current amount with your university.
How do I pay tuition fees from Pakistan?
Pay by bank transfer directly to the university's official account using the reference on your invoice. Pakistani banks process education remittances against an offer letter and fee invoice. Never pay tuition into a personal account.
Can I pay tuition in instalments?
Many private universities let you pay per semester rather than per year, and some offer instalment plans. Public universities usually bill per semester. Ask for the payment schedule before you accept your offer.
How much money should I carry when I travel?
Carry enough for your first two to four weeks, such as rent deposit, food and transport, ideally partly in ringgit. Declare cash above the customs threshold and use a card or transfer for larger amounts.
What one-time costs should I plan for?
Flights, the EMGS visa package, accommodation deposit (often one to two months' rent), a laptop, bedding and kitchen basics, and textbooks. Budget roughly PKR 200,000 – 400,000 on top of tuition and visa fees.
Are there hidden costs at Malaysian universities?
Some universities charge registration, resource, lab, library or graduation fees on top of tuition, and hostel deposits. Ask for the full fee schedule, not just the tuition figure.
Can I open a bank account in Malaysia as a student?
Yes. Once your Student Pass is endorsed, your university gives you a letter to open a student account at a Malaysian bank.
