Scholarships in Malaysia for Pakistani students: what is realistic

How Malaysian scholarships actually work, which ones Pakistani students can get, how much they cover, and how to apply without falling for "100% scholarship" promises.

The four types of funding

Our directory lists 116 awards open to Pakistani students. They fall into four groups:

For most undergraduates the realistic outcome is a merit waiver of 10% – 50% of tuition, sometimes combined with an early-bird or sibling discount. Living costs, flights and visa fees are almost never covered at bachelor’s level.

Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS)

MIS is the Malaysian government’s flagship award for international master’s and PhD students. It covers tuition fees for the sponsorship period and pays a monthly living allowance of RM 1,500. Pakistan is among the eligible Commonwealth countries. The 2026/2027 round has closed; watch the Ministry of Higher Education scholarship portal for the 2027/2028 call, and prepare your research proposal, references and transcripts in advance.

Other postgraduate options include university research scholarships such as UTM Ascend Bright Talent (tuition plus RM 3,000 a month for PhD), University of Malaya Bright Scholarship, Taylor’s Research Excellence Scholarship and full or partial research fee waivers at Nottingham, Swinburne and UOW Malaysia.

Many merit awards are assessed automatically from your FSc or A-Level results when you apply, so the single most useful thing you can do is apply early with complete, attested results.

How to apply, step by step

Check eligibility for level, nationality, grades and English.
Apply for admission and the scholarship together. Some awards are automatic; others need a separate form or essay.
Prepare documents: transcripts, certificates, English result, passport, CV and, for postgraduates, a research proposal and two references.
Write a specific personal statement explaining your goals and why this programme.
Meet deadlines. Merit funds are limited each intake; apply 4 – 6 months ahead.
Keep it. Many awards are renewable only if you maintain a minimum CGPA.

Misconceptions to avoid

“100% scholarship for everyone.” Full undergraduate scholarships are rare. Be wary of agents who promise one before seeing your results.
“A scholarship covers everything.” Most cover tuition only. Budget for living costs, insurance and flights.
“Discounts and scholarships always combine.” Many universities allow only one award at a time.
“Apply after you arrive.” Most entrance awards must be applied for, or are assessed, with your admission.

Can Pakistani students get a scholarship in Malaysia?

Yes. Many private universities and branch campuses give merit scholarships to international students, and postgraduates can apply for the Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS) and university research scholarships.

Is there a fully funded scholarship for a bachelor's in Malaysia?

Rarely. A few awards can reach 100% of tuition, but they are very competitive. Most undergraduate awards cover 10% – 50% of tuition.

What is the Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS)?
